I have known of this event for most of my life because my Aunt Lois (Watson) McKenzie was one of the nurses on the flight which crashed in Albania.Cate Lineberry has written a remarkably book. Well researched and detailed, the book is a pleasure to read. Her style is gripping and enjoyable, while filling in many of the specific details of the ordeal which the group of survivors overcame. Whether the reader is a student of history, or just someone interested in a little known adventure of World War II, this is a great book for adding to the lore of that remarkable generation.
The survivors of the crash were for the most part Army nurses and medics with little or no training in survival behind enemy lines. The geography, language and culture of Albania made that place probably one of the most challenging locations in Europe for the group to try to travel through and to survive. Throw in the ever present threat of discovery by German soldiers, and you have quite a tale of heroism and perseverance for the survivors to just deal with getting through each day.
This book was a joy for me to read. I highly recommend it to anyone who may be interested in learning more about the people who served in World War II.

I usually end up falling asleep within a short time when I read in bed at night. With this book, however, the extremely interesting subject matter and excellent writing made me want to keep going to the next page to find out what happens. Something that made the book even more appealing to me is that one of the nurses involved was from Butler, Kentucky which is just a few miles away from my home town of Newport, Kentucky.
History is one of my favorite subjects and I'm always looking for ways to learn about significant events from the past...especially the Civil War and both world wars. This is definitely a book that anyone interested in history or WWII in particular should read. Fantastic!!
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It gives an excellent recounting of the hardships and determination of a group of medics and nurses whose plane crash landed in Nazi-occupied territory in Albania. Shuttled from village to village, always hungry and cold, this group had to walk up & down mountains to avoid capture and survive their ordeal. Remarkably all were eventually liberated. It gives one a deep appreciation for the courage and sacrifice of the WWII generation. Life for the Albanians was very difficult during this time and yet villages and families shared food from their own meager resources.
I COULDN'T PUT THIS BOOK DOWN TIL I HAD FINISHED IT.......IT HELD MY ATTENTION AND AS I READ IT I REMEMBERED SOME OF THE WWII VETS STORIES THAT I HAD HEARD AND COULD RELATE BETTER TO THE BOOK.....ESPECIALLY WHERE THEY ARE CROSSING THE MOUNTAINS IN THE SEVERAL FEET OF SNOW...AND THEIR SHOES WORN OUT......ONE FRIEND I HAVE TALKS OF THE SNOWS AND BLIZZARDS AND IF THEY HAD NOT KEPT MOVING THEY WOULD HAVE FROZE TO DEATH...THE ONLY THING THAT SAVED THEM WAS THEY HAD TO KEEP MOVING ... MY FRIEND WAS IN GERMANY AT THAT TIME......THEIR SURVIVAL SKILLS WERE AWESOME.....
I LIKED THE BOOK VERY MUCH.....AND I WOULD RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE TO READ......AND ESPECIALLY TO THOSE IN THE MEDICAL FIELD......

This story is one of those 'untold' stories of WWII--one of heroism and persistence and hope. The geographical setting is unfamiliar to most readers but the characters who tromped over mountains and through remote villages brought the experience to life. I only wish we had heard from the nurses who were part of this group of lost heroes. I would like to have known their stories from a female and nurse perspective.
This is a factual account of a medical (WWII) l wartime mission gone badly astray. It has only recently been released from the secret files and this is the last and only first person account of this mission and its terrible consequences. Such bravery and endurance is a tribute to these soldiers and to those who helped them often with terrible consequences for the locals. I salute the writer who dug all these facts out from many sources. It is a compelling story of these times !
This is a wonderful story of courage and selfless hospitality. A must read for history buffs and war historians alike. A literary snapshot of an indomitable people and their selfless courage in their assistance to the stranded American flyers and nurses. The Albanian people literally gave of their last food resources to help others, what a beautiful people they must be. To take in at the risk of their own lives and feed with the little food they had available, knowing that their very kindness could result in their, and their families deaths makes the actions of the villagers and partisans alike, extraordinary.
As for the nurses and flyers stranded in a war-torn country, harbored by strangers and led into the unknown, their courage in the face of adversity is also extraordinary. The hardships and continual disappointments experienced by these people are a testament to a generation of strong and courageous people; who in the face of adversity and possible death, keep marching on suffering in silent strength. Heroes all, Americans and Albanians alike.
I'm always amazed at what ordinary people can do in the face of the most difficult circumstances. This story of the escape/rescue of a downed medical evacuation team from within WWII Albania is filled with so many acts of courage and perseverance I wanted to hand out medals to everyone, Americans, British and Albanians alike! It is told in almost dizzying detail, mostly due to the convoluted route the team had to take, and it is hard to track with all the movements they made. (Keep a map handy!) The author did very well to piece this together into a cohesive, engaging story. Some of the crew have written their own memoirs which I'll try to find. Grateful for the medical evac units, the men and women who served and sacrificed, the author's years of work to gather this information before these dear Veterans are all gone and those across the sea who sacrificed so much. A worthy tribute.
